Introduction to module

 

This module is designed for students on the Diploma in Management Studies.  

 

The module provides an organisational perspective on the study of information systems, and emphasizes the strategic and decision-making role of information technology and information systems in the management of business operations and the enabling of enterprise collaboration to gain competitive advantage.

 

The module will be delivered through a series of lectures and seminars.  It is expected that some seminars will be student led, and at these times students will be expected to produce the necessary Overhead Projector Slides and background hand-outs.  Seminar work will be largely case-based team-work and students will be expected to undertake joint tasks and negotiate intra-team solutions to the tasks set.

 

Aims

 

bullet To provide students with an understanding of the strategic importance of information resources in contemporary organisations
bullet To enable students to assess information needs at different levels of the organisation and evaluate appropriate strategies and systems to support those requirements.
bullet To increase students’ comprehension of the importance of efficient and effective management of information systems.
bullet To develop students ability to evaluate the increasing importance of managing organisational knowledge.
bullet To identify ethical, legal and social issues of managing information systems.

 

Learning Outcomes

 

On completion of this module students will:

 

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of strategic information systems in organisations and analyse strategies for IS/IT.
  2. Critically assess the requirements for developing information systems and manage the development of systems to support strategic business and e-business operations aimed at increasing organisational effectiveness.
  3. Identify and critically assess methods for managing the control and security of information systems in organisations.
  4. Evaluate the importance of managing the intellectual capital of organisations.
  5. Consider the ethical, legal and social requirements of information systems
