Introduction to module

 

This module is designed for postgraduate students in the BIMO Department on the M.Sc. in Information Management and Finance, the M.Sc. in Business Information Technology, and the M.Sc. in Business Information Technology Management.   

 

The module will be delivered through a series of lectures and seminars.  It is expected that some seminars will be student led, and at these times students will be expected to produce the necessary Overhead Projector Slides and background hand-outs.  Seminar work will be largely case-based team-work and students will be expected to undertake joint tasks and negotiate intra-team solutions to the tasks set

 

The module sets out to evaluate the roles that people, systems, and their management play in organisations. Students will consider the way organisations are structured and how new technology, and the changing environment, will require change in organisational strategies and ways of working.  Students will be expected to evaluate the role of knowledge and information in developing strategies and new ways of working.  The role of the manager in undertaking change management will be also be analysed.

 

Aims

bullet To provide a framework for the development and implementation of information and its related systems and technology within organisations especially the sociotechnical implications.
bullet To provide understanding of the ways in which systems alter organisations and the way they are structured and operate.
bullet To provide students with knowledge of approaches for the successful design of strategies for information systems, technology, and management, that align to business needs.
bullet To develop students’ ability to evaluate the increasing importance of managing organisational knowledge.
bullet To develop students’ understanding of internal and sociotechnical issues within organisations undergoing change.

 


 

Learning Outcomes

 

On completion of this module students will:

 

  1. Evaluate and appreciate the sociotechnical aspects related to the development and implementation of information systems within organisations utilising business awareness;
  2. Evaluate and appreciate the operational management of organisational systems using both business awareness and creative thinking;
  3. Describe the role of the manager within organisations and the needs of the job role especially in relation to change management and be able to apply a range of methods and tools.
  4. Debate theories of organisations and the sociotechnical implications of the way in which systems affect structures and be able to identify and define potential problems;
  5. Interpret methods for developing strategies for Information, IM, IS, and IT and apply tools and methods as appropriate.
