etched glass, mirror, mahogany lightbox

'Illegitimate daughter' uses original ttext from Old Kirk session records and other material found in the National Archives of Scotland,This is combined with material more closely related to birth family history.

The piece is concerned both with this original orthographic text and the power and resonance of language.

The final designs were front and back etched onto panels of glass and a mirror to produce a multiple layered effect.

The initial inspiration for the glass etching came from the church in Croick. Sutherland. People dis-placed by the highland clearances scratched their names and messages on the church windows as they gathered in the churchyard before leaving for Canada.
