The ocean between  is an installation inspired by two emigrant journeys to Canada. One made by destitute girls from the Maria Rye home in Peckham in the 19th century and the other by my birth mother in the early 1950s.

The video uses location filming in Canada and constructed sequences. This is projected through panels of glass etched with fragments taken from archival texts and charts from Britain and Canada

'We place the ocean between them and their former companions and in a short time these children forget their early asscociations, which become to them like a dream of the past'

"I am so homesick I do not know what to do with myself'
