'Gone into the workhouse' is a mixed media installation based on research into the rural poor of Romney Marsh and was originally produced as a site-specific work for the medieval church at Old Romney.
Video is projected through glass panels to reflect the fragmentary, conflicted nature of memory
The video refers to three main 'narratives' base on the char-woman, the workhouse orphan and poor agricultural emigrants.
This work was developed through extensive location filming in and around 10 of the medieval churches in Romney marsh. This was combined with research in Kent archives and the creation of constructed video sequences to produce the final piece.
The workhouse architecture and the separation of genders and ages with-in its walls influenced the construction
of the separate 'compartments' with hessian pallets between the glass panels
